Wonderland Selected for The Best Buddhist Writing 2010
Doen Sensei’s insightful and though-provoking Wonderland: The Zen of Alice, which was published by Parallax Press in October 2009, was recently selected to appear in The Best Buddhist Writing 2010, edited by Melvin Mcleod. This is the seventh annual compilation of the most notable Dharma writings of the year, compiled by editors of the Shambala Sun and published by Shambala Publications.
In recent years this annual compilation has featured the work of John Daido Loori, Roshi; Thich Nhat Hanh; the Dalai Lama; Pema Chodron; Sylvia Boorstein; Natalie Goldberg; and many other deeply respected teachers and writers.
In the brief six months since Wonderland was first published, its critical acclaim has been gratifying. The book has received enthusiastic reviews, has climbed Amazon’s charts, and is being translated into several languages. Congratulations to Doen Sensei!
Random House To Publish German Edition Of Wonderland
When Doen Sensei’s Wonderland: The Zen of Alice was first published in October, it received an enthusiastic welcome–many readers who came to book signings were turned away because booksellers had not anticipated how heavy the demand would be (one store sold more than 50 copies in less than an hour). Just four months later, the book is drawing more and more new readers. Wonderland currently ranks number 15 in Amazon’s “Zen Philosophy” category and number 26 in the vast, general “Zen” category.
Wonderland‘s success has been so impressive that Random House will be publishing a German version in the near future. We’ll keep you updated on other new versions as they’re announced. Congratulations, Sensei, and bring on your next book!
Full House in Wonderland
Today in Salt Lake City Doen held a book signing for his just-released Wonderland: The Zen of Alice. We had known that Wonderlandwas swiftly rising up the Amazon best-sellers (in the Zen and philosophy categories), but were all a bit surprised when Doen’s book was sold out a mere 45 minutes after the signing started!
We eked out the books, promising to hold another signing as soon as we could get one put together, and Doen graciously chatted with the crowd that had come hoping to walk out with several copies each. But one determined biker would not be deterred. After riding to the book store on a fairly warm day, hearing that the book was sold out, and making sure (“very sure, no, Doen is not kidding”) that it really was sold out, he hesitated not a moment longer, pushed up his shirt sleeve, and presented his arm for Doen to sign and stamp with his chop.

The party continued for quite a while after the books were gone. For those of you in Salt Lake, stay tuned: we hope to organize another signing (with a reading, perhaps, and maybe even a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party) in the next few weeks.

The rank fluctuates daily, but it was recently ranked around #30,000 overall (up from #200,000 last week). It was also ranked #15 in the Zen Philosophy category.
